It is hard to imagine that Myers Park was once viewed as a treeless cotton farm. Charlotteans today know Myers Park as one of the most affluent and sought-after addresses, an area of tree-lined streets, and curving drives.

The beautiful tree lined streets that I often bike were not here in the beginning. In 1915, John Nolen, designer for Myers Park started to change the former cotton field into the extraordinary area we enjoy today. Myers Park has statewide significance because it was the home of many textile, banking, and utility leaders responsible for developing the Piedmont Carolinas into a major American manufacturing region in the early twentieth century.

The history of Myers Park may be broken into three eras. First is the creation on the land of J.S. Myers under the direction of developer George Stephens, with the design guidance of John Nolen and Earle Sumner Draper. The era lasted from 1911 until Stephen’s departure in 1922. The second period lasted until 1922 until 1935. Myers Park filled out, but some of what Nolen and Draper has imagined was set aside, and the area developed with less green space and more small homes on smaller home sites than they had envisioned. In the third era, from 1935 to the present, the professionally trained planners’ ideas were totally forgotten as the neighborhood moved forward in development. In the 1960’s much of the Nolen-designed area was even zoned for re-development, and only in the last few years have Nolen’s and Draper’s contributions begun to be appreciated and safeguarded.
